A Journey into Japanese,
Starting from What You Love
— Where language leads to new ways of seeing the world

At Kotoba no Niwa, each learning journey is thoughtfully customized to match your level and purpose — whether for travel, hobbies, work, or a turning point in life. Wherever you begin, learning Japanese deeply can lead to unexpected encounters — with culture, history, and yourself.

Start with what you love, and grow at your own pace, discovering the quiet depth of language. Along the way, we’ll help you find the words you truly need — words that speak to your heart.

Together, we’ll begin weaving your own personal dictionary. As your gentle guide, I’ll walk beside you on this quiet, enriching journey.

2. Who This Program Is For

This program is designed for those who resonate with the following:
Those who don’t just want to use Japanese, but wish to feel and savor the language.
Those who value not only vocabulary and grammar, but also the cultural, emotional, and historical depth behind words.
Those who want to deepen their thinking and sensitivity, and express themselves in their own authentic words.
Those seeking words to better connect with others—and with themselves.
Those who want to revisit and relearn Japanese gently, at their own pace.

3. Program Pathways

Explore three unique ways to grow in the Garden of Words.

1) Japanese, Your Way

— Tailored one-on-one lessons based on your goals — whether for travel, work, hobbies, or quiet reflection.

Japanese for Travelers

Planning a trip to Japan?
These lessons will help you feel more confident and connected during your journey.

We’ll practice useful expressions for shopping, transportation, dining, and cultural etiquette — gently and thoroughly.

From the Roots: Lessons from Beginner to Advanced

From reading and writing to grammar, vocabulary, and real-life conversation, we’ll start from where you are.

These lessons focus not only on how to ”say”, but also how to ”listen” and ”feel” the language deeply.

Language Through Literature

Let’s read slowly and thoughtfully — poetry, short stories, essays, articles — and discover the subtle beauty and emotional resonance within Japanese words.

A quiet time to read, feel, and reflect together.

Polishing Your Japanese

Do you want to sound more natural when speaking or writing in Japanese?

We’ll gently work on common habits and overly English-like phrases.
Together, we’ll polish your expressions to become more authentic and impactful.

JLPT Preparation (N5–N1)

These lessons offer practical strategies and support for all levels of the JLPT.
While working toward passing the test, we also build the kind of Japanese you can truly use in daily life.

2) The dō × kotoba Program

— Language and spirit through the path of Budo and traditional arts.

For those engaged in traditional Japanese arts such as budō, sadō, kadō, or shodō.

We explore the spirit and aesthetic sensibility behind these “Ways (dō)” through language.
This journey deepens your cultural understanding and enhances your personal practice.

When the Way and the Word intertwine, quiet discoveries begin to bloom.
Let us walk that path together.

3) Language Learning, Gentle Connection

— Community-based Events in the Garden of Words

Kotoba Garden Party & Japanese Sprout

Kotoba Garden Party – A Potluck of Words

A gentle place to grow your Japanese with others

What is the Garden Party?

A warm, small-group conversation circle hosted by Kotoba no Niwa.

Adult learners of Japanese gather to share and exchange words
— just like a potluck gathering of thoughts and voices.

Each session includes a gentle warm-up and input,
making it easy even for those who feel shy about speaking.

What This Gathering Aims For

・A space to experience Japanese, not just learn it
・A quiet space where each voice can resonate
・A conversation that listens to language and culture, not just an exchange of words
・A safe space to make mistakes, pause, and gain confidence
・Moments where your view of the world quietly shifts — through Japanese

Participation Requirements

・For learners with some experience in Japanese (Late Beginner level or above)
→ If you’re a complete beginner, we recommend starting with “Japanese Sprout”

・A willingness to speak without needing to be perfect
→ Great for those who enjoy exploring and playing with language

This is for you if…

・You feel like you don’t have many places to “try using” Japanese
・You want to feel and reflect in Japanese, not just study it
・You’re curious about the joy of dialogue in Japanese
・You’d like to speak at your own pace in a small class

Japanese Sprout – Easy Style

A gentle start to speaking in Japanese

What is Japanese Sprout?

A relaxed, beginner-friendly language café for those just starting their Japanese journey.

Even if you’re not confident in speaking yet, no problem—listening-only participation is welcome!

We use gestures, illustrations, and fun cards to help you enjoy trying Japanese in a low-pressure setting.

What This Gathering Aims For

・Comfort with the sounds and rhythms of Japanese
・Moments of “I got it!” and “I said it!”— small wins that build confidence
・A growing curiosity to learn more, through joyful experience
・A sense of connection with fellow beginners

Recommended Level

・Complete beginners or learners with less than 1 year of Japanese
・Okay if you only speak a few words or can’t yet read hiragana
・Romanized Japanese (alphabet-based) support available

What We Cherish in Both Sessions

・The joy of expressing in your own words, not just getting it “right”
・A safe, supportive space for learning through connection and resonance
・A sense of community you can’t always find in one-on-one lessons
・Respect for your personal pace and learning style

A Message for You

“In this space, enjoying the experience is more important than speaking perfectly.
It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay not to speak.

Just listen, smile, nod—and gently build a friendship with the Japanese language.”

Bring your tea, maybe a sweet treat,
and come spend a warm, connected moment through words.

6. Voices from the Garden

At Kotoba no Niwa, learners from diverse backgrounds — each with their own goals, sensitivities, and pace — are engaging with the Japanese language in a way that is both personal and profound.

Here are some reflections from those who have walked this quiet path of discovery and growth with us.

Olivia | Market / Branding
CA, USA

Michi sensei was always warm and welcoming in our 1:1 Japanese lessons. I looked forward to our weekly lessons (in person and then later online) because it always felt like having a nice chat with a good friend. She always tailored our lessons to my needs, and I loved how we split the lessons between more formal Japanese language studies (vocabulary, grammar, etc) and conversation. While I was studying with Michi sensei, I was able to maintain my Japanese and speak with confidence.

Jonathon | Educator / Educational Administrator
CA, USA

Meeting Michi was one of the most important steps I took in my Japanese-language learning journey. As a teacher and an educational administrator, my standards are quite high – for both myself and for the language teacher I was seeking. Michi met all of my expectations. She embodied a “warm demander” in working with me to keep me challenged while also providing a high level of support. I felt seen, valued, and excited in my Japanese language classes. Michi is exceptional and I highly recommend!

I really appreciated that Michi took time out of her schedule with her family to meet with me and my partner when we visited Tokyo. She introduced us to a local curry restaurant that was delicious and was very encouraging in my language practice!

Pad | Automotive Manufacturing
GA, USA

Michi Sensei is a fantastic teacher at all levels! She is friendly, non-judgemental, and we have a good laugh as she corrects me. I came to her to get actual help and she provided! If you are serious about studying and looking for a teacher who cares and is passionate, Michi Sensei is perfect.

Kumar | Health Care Analytics
FL, USA

Michi-Sensei’s lessons are wonderful. I’ve learned a lot to speak basic conversations in Japanese. I look forward to using all my knowledge Michi-Sensei taught me on my next trip to Japan.

Taariq
CA, USA

Michi sensei’s classes were always a great experience. She’s an excellent teacher and very attentive. In no time at all we would have lessons almost entirely in Japanese.

Michi is incredibly patient and makes learning Japanese feel natural and enjoyable. I love that she mixes real-world examples into the lessons, so I can use what I learn right away. Every class leaves me feeling more confident and excited to keep going.
